Is It Urgent?
Some situations are urgent but others—although they can be frightening—are not. Urgent situations might include the following:
- Uncontrolled bleeding from the mouth
- A permanent tooth that has become loose or fully knocked out
- An injury to the jaw (Note: If you think your jaw might be broken, call 911 or go straight to the emergency room.)
- A trauma that resulted in painful swelling
- A toothache that is unbearable
In these cases, Dr. Chen will have you come to our office so he can take care of your pain and discomfort and make a plan for treatment.
What Is Considered Non-Urgent?
Some examples of situations that are not urgent include the following:
- A filling or crown that has fallen off
- A broken, cracked, or chipped tooth
- A broken dental appliance
- Food stuck between teeth

The Best Way to Prevent Dental Emergencies
Although some emergencies are beyond your control, you can prevent many urgent dental issues by visiting your dentist twice a year for checkups and cleanings. This will enable your dentist to detect problems before they grow into emergencies.
