If you have ever experienced a dental emergency, you know firsthand just how scary they can be. One of the most confusing things about a dental emergency is knowing if the situation is indeed an emergency.

The first thing to remember is to try not to panic—and call emergency dentist Dr. John Chen of Uptown Comprehensive Dentistry and Prosthodontics in Aurora. We realize that emergencies often happen at the most inopportune times, and we leave openings in our schedule to accommodate dental emergencies that pop up. We can also help you assess the situation to give you some recommendations on how best to handle the situation.

Is It Urgent?

Some situations are urgent but others—although they can be frightening—are not. Urgent situations might include the following:

  • Uncontrolled bleeding from the mouth
  • A permanent tooth that has become loose or fully knocked out
  • An injury to the jaw (Note: If you think your jaw might be broken, call 911 or go straight to the emergency room.)
  • A trauma that resulted in painful swelling
  • A toothache that is unbearable

In these cases, Dr. Chen will have you come to our office so he can take care of your pain and discomfort and make a plan for treatment.

What Is Considered Non-Urgent?

Some examples of situations that are not urgent include the following:

  • A filling or crown that has fallen off
  • A broken, cracked, or chipped tooth
  • A broken dental appliance
  • Food stuck between teeth

If you are experiencing one of those, give us a call. We will get you in at our earliest open appointment.

The Best Way to Prevent Dental Emergencies

Although some emergencies are beyond your control, you can prevent many urgent dental issues by visiting your dentist twice a year for checkups and cleanings. This will enable your dentist to detect problems before they grow into emergencies.

Call Uptown Comprehensive Dentistry and Prosthodontics if you are in need of an emergency dentist. We can help!
