If you have been told that you need a dental crown to repair your tooth rather than a dental filling, you might be wondering why.

What Is a Dental Crown?

At our Aurora, CO dental office, crowns and bridges are common restorations we offer our patients. A dental crown is essentially a cover that fits over a tooth to strengthen and protect it. This differs from a bridge which is a restoration that fills in the gap left by one or more missing teeth. It is frequently attached to two teeth that have been fitted with dental crowns.

When Would I Need a Dental Crown?

As mentioned, one of the uses for a dental crown is to secure a dental bridge into place. Other times you might need a crown include:

  • To repair a tooth that has become fractured by a substantial filling. Often so much of the tooth has been removed already, it is not possible to use a filling to repair it. A dental crown snugly fits over the tooth, making it strong and protecting it against further fracture.
  • If you had a root canal, we usually recommend a dental crown to strengthen the tooth structure, which has been weakened by the procedure. Without the living tissue in the tooth root—which is removed during a root canal—the tooth tends to become brittle.
  • When a tooth has a fracture or crack, a dental crown can repair the tooth, restoring its function.

What Is the Dental Crown Procedure?

Unlike traditional dental crowns, which take at least two dental appointments, we are pleased to offer same-day crown technology with E4D. In just one visit to our office, we can make a digital impression of your tooth, and our onsite milling unit creates the crown while you wait. We can place the crown right then—and you won’t have to come back again.
